Cikini Library and HB Jassin Literary Document Center Open Until 10 PM

The Jakarta Government is about to extend the operating hours of all the libraries it manages, following a direct directive of the Governor Pramono Anung to enhance public access to literacy and cultural spaces in Jakarta.

This has been going on for the last two weeks, from 9 AM to 10 PM

Jakarta Library and Archives Agency (Dispusip) Head, Syaefuloh Hidayat said the extended opening hours have started to be tested at two main libraries, namely the Cikini Regional Public Library and the HB Jassin Literary Documentation Center (PDS). Both are open until 10 PM every day.

"This has been going on for the last two weeks, from 9 AM to 10 PM. Previously, it was only until 4 PM," he expressed, Monday (5/5).

This policy would be implemented gradually, starting with the two libraries. It would then expand to other regional libraries in Central, East, South, West, and North Jakarta. However, full implementation would depend on the readiness of facilities and human resources.

"If the service hours are extended, the work system of the staff must be adjusted. We are currently developing a shift system for the staff and continuously evaluating public interest as a basis for extending opening hours," he added.

Based on the data, visits to the Cikini Library on weekends can reach over 3,500 people. The high enthusiasm of the public, including support on social media, serves as a strong motivation to fully implement this policy.

Besides borrowing and reading books, libraries also serve as public spaces that support social interaction, education, and artistic expression.

"In the library, there are discussion rooms, writing workshops, children's storytelling, and even student work exhibitions. This is part of Jakarta's identity as a literacy city moving towards a global city," he added.

In the future, Dispusip aimed for all the libraries it manages to operate until 10 PM.

"We want to be open from Monday to Sunday until evening. The clear principle is to provide the best service for Jakartans," he stated.
